Episode 5 | Baby Gear Essentials

Podcast Show Notes: Episode 5 | Baby Gear Essentials

Baby Gear Essentials. – Today, we’re tackling a topic every new parent navigates.

First up, having a baby is a wonderful excuse to indulge the shopaholic in all of us and there are some essential items that all families will need for their baby, however much of what you see in baby stores is optional and may not be required or can be borrowed from friends and family and remember there will also be gifts.

Cot:

One of those must-have items is a cot. You can feel confident knowing that any cot purchased new in Australia complies with Australian Safety Standards and will be safe for your precious baby. Do check if purchasing online for this. If using second hand it is best to buy one manufactured after 2003 so it complies with the current safety standard. Antique cots, can be beautiful pieces of furniture but don’t adhere to these standards.

Bassinet or cradle:

Not recommended by health professionals and safe sleep experts as they have no mandatory safety standards, therefore experts recommend using a full size cot from birth.

However in my experience the majority of family’s still choose to use a bassinet and I did too, as they are small, able to be moved between rooms and easily fit in the parent’s bedroom. If you do choose to use one please ensure that the mattress is firm, fits snuggly, it has good air flow, no hood, if it has wheels that they are lockable, that there is no fabric draping down the sides for decoration, no ribbons or trims which could be risks. And as soon as your baby shows signs of rolling, move them to a cot.

Change table:

You will be changing thousands of nappies over the fist few years, it’s worth investing in a change table to save your back. There are many different styles from pieces of furniture to fold up and even tables that attach to the top of the cot.

Car restraints:

All new car restraints sold in Australia must comply with mandatory safety standards. It is best to buy new or if buying second hand it’s best to buy from a reliable person or company. If a car seat has ever been in an accident it must be disposed of.

From birth to 6 months’ babies must be in a rear facing restraint and experts advise they stay in this as long as possible before moving to a forward facing option. Some are a capsule style and are only rear facing and and others convert from rear to forward facing when needed. Some capsule style can always click into the pram and be used here too.

Pram:

There are many different types to choose from. These are covered by mandatory safety standards. It is worth spending a little extra for a light weight model if possible so that you can lift it in and out of the car with ease.

Getting set-up for your baby doesn’t have to break the bank. Look for budget-friendly options and packages that include multiple items such as a cot, mattress and change table – they have the added bonus of them all matching. Many affordable yet quality choices are available, allowing you to prioritize without compromising on safety and comfort. And if you have a larger budget, the skies the limit with choices, you will be able to find styles and brands that fit your preferred aesthetic.

Navigating the sea of baby products can be overwhelming but fear not! Research and read reviews, consult other parents, and consider the long-term value of each item. Look for safety certifications and practical features that align with your lifestyle.

Speaking of safety, it’s paramount. Choose gear with safety features like secure harnesses, non-toxic materials, and sturdy construction. Whether it’s a cot or a high chair, prioritize your baby’s well-being in every choice you make.

And there you have it—a quick guide to the essential baby equipment. I will go into more detail about specific baby equipment in coming episodes. Remember, every family is unique, so tailor your choices to fit your lifestyle and preferences.
