Ep 20 | Essential Nappy Bag Packing Tips for New Parents
Today we’re talking about an essential topic for every new parent: what to put in your nappy bag. Whether you’re heading out for a quick errand or a day-long adventure, having a well-stocked nappy bag can make all the difference. Let’s dive into what you need to keep your baby happy and comfortable on the go.
Getting out and about with your baby is a vital step in re-establishing some ‘normality’ in your routine. But, as any parent can tell you, it requires some planning and a bit of trial and error. Knowing what to put in your nappy bag is key to ensuring you have everything your baby might need. So, let’s break down the basics.
First up, nappy change equipment. This is a must-have, make sure you pack:
– Nappies: A good rule of thumb is one for each hour you plan to be out, plus a couple of extras.

The pack is full of checklists and printables to help you improve sleep challenges with our flowchart, decide what to take to hospital, what equipment is essential, what to put in your nappy bag and so much more
– Wipes: These are essential not only for nappy changes but for cleaning sticky hands and faces.
– Nappy disposal bags: Perfect for containing those used nappies until you can find a bin.
Next, feeding needs. Depending on whether you’re breastfeeding or formula feeding, you’ll need:
– A bib or burp cloth to keep those adorable outfits clean.
– Breast pads if you’re breastfeeding to avoid any unexpected leaks.
– A bottle with boiled water and formula powder if you’re formula feeding.
Don’t forget extra clothes, pack:
– One onesie and a singlet: Babies have a knack for needing outfit changes at the most inconvenient times.
If your baby uses a dummy, make sure you have one on hand. And don’t forget your own needs. Include:
– Your purse or wallet.
– Keys.
– A snack and a drink for yourself. Keeping your energy up is important too!
One pro tip: If possible, keep your nappy bag packed at all times. This allows you to be spontaneous when someone invites you out unexpectedly. It gives you more freedom to enjoy those precious moments with friends and family without the stress of packing a bag from scratch.
If you have an outing planned for the next day, pack any additional items the night before. For example, if you’re seeing the maternal and child health nurse, a lactation consultant, a doctor, or a paediatrician, pack your child health record book.
And here’s a tip that could save you a lot of hassle: Factor an extra 15 minutes into your getting-ready routine. Trust me, you will need it!
Now, let’s talk about extra supplies. There’s only so much you can fit in your nappy bag, but I recommend keeping another small bag in the boot of your car.
This backup bag should include:
– Extra nappies and clothes.
– An outfit for yourself. Believe me, there will come a time when a nappy leaks onto you or your baby decides to vomit down your front. It happens to the best of us.
I distinctly remember my lovely first baby ‘power pooing’—yes, that’s what we called it—all through her nappy, jumpsuit, and all over my jeans! We were out of town at the time, fortunately visiting family, so I could borrow some pants. But it was a clear lesson: keep a spare set of clothes in the car.
I’ve also heard parents use the term “Poonami” for this kind of event!
Sometimes, despite your best efforts, you’ll run out of nappies or your baby will make a mess of your clothes, and you’ll just have to go home. And that’s okay! Every outing is a learning experience and helps you be better prepared for the next time.
To make things even easier, I’ve created a nappy bag checklist that you can download for free. This checklist, along with a bonus bundle of other helpful tools like a baby equipment checklist, a hospital bag checklist, a childcare bag checklist, a travel checklist, a sleep and feed tracker, and a newborn sleep flowchart, is designed to help you feel more prepared and confident as a new parent.
