Podcast Episode 13 | Unlocking the Power of Tummy Time: Essential Tips for Your Baby’s Development
Today, we’re going to dive into the importance of tummy time for your baby. Many parents ask me why we keep encouraging tummy time and why it’s such a big deal!
Tummy time is not just another activity to check off your list; it’s a crucial part of your baby’s development right from the start. Even in those early days, when your baby is just a tiny bundle of joy, tummy time matters. You can start tummy time from birth, and even though your newborn might spend most of their time snuggled up against your chest, those moments are invaluable.
As a midwife and maternal and child health nurse, I’ve seen firsthand how essential it is to incorporate tummy time into your baby’s routine. Not only does it help strengthen their back, neck, and shoulders, but it also sets the stage for crucial motor development milestones.

But why is tummy time so important? Well, for starters, it helps prevent flat spots on your baby’s head by giving their head a break from constant pressure on the back. Additionally, it encourages your baby to lift their head and gradually gain control over their movements.
It’s important to start early as baby’s heads grow fast and become heavy, if they haven’t been practising tummy time they will find it really hard to lift and often start to dislike it because it’s difficult.
So what if your baby doesn’t like tummy time? Trust me; you’re not alone in this. Many babies initially protest tummy time, but with a little creativity and patience, you can make it more enjoyable for them.
I like to call it “tummy time by stealth.” It’s all about finding creative ways to incorporate tummy time into everyday activities. Whether it’s carrying your baby over your arm, laying them on your chest, placing a mirror in front of them, or using a large exercise ball, there are plenty of options to explore.
Remember, the key is to make tummy time a positive experience for your baby. Use colourful mats, play some fun music, or give them a gentle back massage to keep them engaged and happy during tummy time sessions.
And here’s a tip: If your baby becomes distressed during tummy time, don’t force it. Pick them up and try again later. It’s all about building their confidence and gradually increasing their tolerance for tummy time.
By around 8 weeks of age, most babies should be able to lift their head up off the floor and hold it for some time during tummy time. If your baby is struggling to reach this milestone, don’t worry. Just keep practicing, and they’ll get there in their own time.
And before you know it, your little one will start rolling over, another exciting milestone in their journey of development. So, enjoy these precious moments of tummy time with your baby, knowing that you’re laying the foundation for their development.
