Preparing For Your Baby and Thriving in Early Motherhood
Becoming a mum for the first time is a life-changing experience filled with excitement, anticipation, and, let’s be honest, a little bit of anxiety. Let’s start preparing for your baby and thriving in early motherhood. Whether you’re preparing for your baby’s arrival or navigating the early weeks of parenthood, it’s natural to feel overwhelmed. But with the right preparation and mindset, you can feel more confident and empowered in this beautiful journey.
In this blog, we’ll explore three simple yet effective tips to help you prepare for your baby’s arrival and thrive in those early months. These tips are designed to make your transition into motherhood smoother and more enjoyable.

Tip 1: Get Organised Before Your Baby Arrives
Preparation is key to feeling confident and ready for your baby’s arrival. Start by creating a checklist of essentials you’ll need for both the hospital and home (or download mine here).
- Pack Your Hospital Bag Early: Aim to have your hospital bag ready by 36 weeks of pregnancy. Include items like comfortable clothing, toiletries, snacks, and essentials for your baby, such as onesies, nappies, and a blanket.
- Set Up Your Nursery: Create a calming and functional space for your baby. Focus on essentials like a cot for a safe sleep space, a change table, and some storage for baby clothes and supplies. This may start in your bedroom and move to another room in future.
- Stock Up on Supplies: Have a good stash of nappies, you’ll be surprised how many you need, wipes, and baby care items ready. Don’t forget to prepare meals or stock your freezer with easy-to-reheat options for those busy early days.
By getting organised ahead of time, you’ll reduce your stress and be able to focus on bonding with your baby once they arrive.

Tip 2: Learn the Basics of Newborn Care
The early weeks with your baby can feel like a whirlwind, but understanding the basics of newborn care can make a big difference.
- Feeding: Whether you choose to breastfeed or bottle-feed, it’s important to learn about feeding cues and techniques. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your local maternity hospital and take some breastfeeding classes, a lactation consultant for 1:1 advice or your healthcare provider for support.
- Sleep: Newborns sleep a lot, but not always in long stretches. Familiarise yourself with safe sleep practices, such as placing your baby flat on their back in a cot free of loose bedding or toys.
- Settling Techniques: Babies communicate through crying, and it’s their way of expressing needs. Learn soothing techniques like swaddling, gentle rocking, or using white noise to help calm your baby.
Remember, it’s okay to ask for help or seek advice from trusted sources. You don’t have to figure everything out on your own.

Tip 3: Prioritise Your Own Wellbeing
As a new mum, it’s easy to put all your focus on your baby and forget about your own needs. However, taking care of yourself is just as important.
- Rest When You Can: Sleep deprivation is a common challenge for pregnant Mums and new parents. Try to rest when your baby sleeps, even if it’s just a short nap and take naps before the birth.
- Ask for Support: Don’t hesitate to lean on your partner, family, or friends for help with household tasks or baby care. If people ask how they can help, they really want to, so give them some tasks to assist such as washing the dishes, cooking a meal for you or putting on a load of laundry.
- Practice Self-Care: Even small acts of self-care, like enjoying a cup of tea, taking a short walk, or practicing deep breathing, can help you recharge and feel more balanced.
When you prioritise your wellbeing, you’ll be better equipped to care for your baby and enjoy this special time together.
